Last Monday the Conservative government passed Bill C-31, dubbed the Refugee Exclusion Act, which allows mandatory detention of refugee claimants, increased
immigration enforcement, and creation of a discriminatory two-tier
refugee determination process by giving the Minister of Citizenship and
Immigration power to determine 'safe' countries of origin. They
also recently introduced cuts to the Interim Federal Health Program
(IFHP), which provided healthcare for refugees. These measures represent
an intensified attack on migrants that will force more people into
precarious immigration status without access to basic services.
Join No One Is Illegal-Halifax on World Refugee Day for a discussion on the impacts of
these policies on our communities. Speakers from the Halifax Refugee Clinic, the Atlantic Refugee and Immigrant Services Society (ARISS), No One Is Illegal--Halifax and more will explain the consequences of Bill C-31 and the cuts to the IFHP and brainstorm ways to fight back against regressive immigration policies.
